RUDY KING DEFENDS AWARD TO PM
BAHAMAS BUSINESSMAN Rudy King yesterday responded to controversy surrounding an awards ceremony held by his organisation, defending the honouring of the prime minister of the Kingdom of Swaziland.
On Saturday, The Tribune published a lead story citing international outrage over the announcement that the controversial Prime Minister of Swaziland, accused of condoning torture, was to be honoured for his “contribution to peace and human dignity.”
Speaking to The Tribune yesterday Mr King claimed, however, that the award was not actually for the Prime Minister of Swaziland Barnabas Dlamini but rather the Kingdom of Swaziland for its efforts in combating the scourge of the AIDS virus.
“Swaziland was chosen, not the prime minister. The Kingdom of Swaziland was chosen for their strides to combat AIDS in their country. The honour was placed on him because he is the present Prime Minister,” Mr King said.
Mr King contended that he was unaware of the furore surrounding the Swaziland prime minister until the night prior to the World Citizen Awards ceremony. According to Mr King, some 365 persons attended the ceremony which was held on Friday night at the British Colonial Hilton when awards were presented to several persons, including American actor Anthony Anderson and former presidents of Costa Rica and Ecuador.
According to Mr King, the World Citizen Award is a humanitarian foundation that was launched five years ago and has become “famous for its work of recognising and honouring selected leaders from all over the world who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields while promoting the causes of peace.”
Mr King told The Tribune yesterday that he felt that the article had cast the King Foundation in a negative light and focused too heavily on his past.
“We help persons, we help organisations, we give school supplies and we give scholarships. We are not an organisation based on telling people what we do,” he said. “People know who Dr King is. I have made some mistakes, I’m not perfect,” Mr King said.

The Curse of Chelsea – Why does Arsenal continue to struggle against Chelsea
Chelsea 2, Arsenal 0.
A casual follower of the Premier League could be forgiven for dismissing Sunday?s result as just another Arsenal defeat in a long line of losses against the top teams in the league. Same old Arsenal: playing pretty possession football, losing key physical challenges, displaying defensive naivety and ultimately tasting bitter defeat.
Most people who watched last night?s game, however, will agree that Arsenal acquitted themselves fairly well against the Blues. Not only did the Gunners control possession, they also fashioned a succession of decent chances and rarely looked under pressure. They were committed, energetic and definitely ?up for it?. As the Match of the Day crew agreed, they were by far the ?better side?. Yet they still lost.
In light of this, a number of questions can be asked: why do the Gunners lose so often against the top teams? Was this performance any different to the status quo? What does this mean for the title challenge? I will focus on answering the first two of these questions.
Arsenal against United and Chelsea
Since the Invincibles era, Arsenal have performed abysmally against Chelsea and Manchester United. In all competitions, their combined record against these clubs reads:
Played: 17 (17) = 34
Wins: 2 (3) = 5
Draws: 5 (4) = 9
Losses: 10 (10) = 20*
* Results against Manchester United are in parentheses.
That there is a problem against these sides is beyond dispute. Why do the Gunners consistently struggle?

Nokia N8 rolls out
The world’s leading cellphone maker, Nokia, said on Thursday it has started to ship its flagship smartphone model the N8, boosting its share price.
Shares in Nokia were 3.5% stronger at 7.46 euros, outperforming the Stoxx Europe 600 Technology index, which was 0.7% up.

“The reaction is surprisingly small when looking at how the share price has developed in the past week,” on shipping speculation, said Nordea analyst Sami Sarkamies.
Last week, Nokia said it had delayed deliveries of the N8 by a few weeks to clients who had pre-ordered, hitting its shares on the day chief executive Stephen Elop started at the helm of the company.
The N8 is seen by analysts as Nokia’s first real challenge to Apple’s iPhone, more than three years after its release. Its success and timing of its introduction are seen crucial to Nokia’s profit margins in the third and fourth quarter.
Sarkamies noted the new flagship device was expected to have a bigger impact on profitability in the fourth quarter than in the third.
FIM analyst Michael Schroder said: “N8 is a step forward for Nokia when considering its portfolio. It is an important device as Nokia attempts to get back to the category of the most expensive smartphones.
“Smartphones is the category that generates the largest part of the result, although in terms of volumes it is still small.”
Nokia said the N8 would be widely available in coming weeks.
“The N8 has received the highest amount of pre-orders in Nokia’s history,” said Jo Harlow, head of the company’s smartphone unit, in a statement.
The N8, first to use Nokia’s new Symbian software, was originally scheduled to reach consumers in June.
In April, Nokia warned the software renewal would take longer than expected due to quality problems, and said the model would reach consumers by the end of September.
A weak offering of smartphones and problems with software were seen as the main reasons for Nokia replacing chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo with Stephen Elop from Microsoft.
The N8 stands out among its rivals for its 12MP camera, but has a slower processor than Samsung’s leading model, the Galaxy S, and Apple’s latest iPhone.

Malema to step down next year
Julius Malema will step down as president of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) next year according to a report on the Witness website.
The website quotes Malema as saying: ?My term ends next year and I think those who hate me so much ? should celebrate?.
Malema was elected president of the ANCYL in April 2008 and his term ends in April 2011.
Speaking at a news conference in Johannesburg, shortly after a meeting of the youth league’s working committee yesterday Malema said: ?If they have decided to extend it to June, then that’s fine too. In June next year I will be done as president of the youth league.”
?The youth league will find its own way around the issue of [a new] president ?They shouldn’t worry because there will always be a leader in the youth league.?
