Nelson Mandela: Media vigil outside hospital
Local and international news media gathered outside the entrance of the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday night as they waited for news about former president Nelson Mandela's health.
Journalists who were inside the hospital earlier were moved out by security guards. A number of journalists on the nearby Emmarentia bridge were also sent packing by metro police officers.
Mandela was admitted to Milpark Hospital on Wednesday afternoon for what were described as routine tests.
By the evening, a veil of silence was drawn over his condition.
Staff at Milpark Hospital declined to speak to journalists who descended on the premises for news on the elder statesman.
By 19:30, the only formal word on the condition of 92-year-old Mandela remained a short statement issued by the Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesperson Sello Hatang around 16:15.
Good spirits
It stated: "We can confirm that Mr Mandela is at Milpark Hospital undergoing routine tests. He is in no danger and is in good spirits."
Hatang did not answer his cellphone for follow-up questions.
Mandela's daughter Makaziwi from his first wife Evelyn said: "You got the statement? No further comment."
Members of the Mandela family were seen coming and going at the hospital by reporters.
A staffer from the French news agency AFP saw Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, leaving the hospital around 17:30, with four other family members departing shortly after.
Another report said she returned later in the evening.
Makeshift barrier
At a far corner of the hospital, a makeshift barrier of green mesh was erected. Inside the area were VIP cars, presumably belonging to family members.
As night fell, journalists, photographers and cameramen lined a nearby bridge outside the hospital that gave them a full view of the barricaded area.
Later in the evening, metro police told them to move off the bridge. Some then took up position in the hospital parking lot.
One of Mandela's grandsons was seen buying magazines and refreshments at the hospital eatery. Ndaba Mandela and his youngest brother were also seen near the barricaded area.
High alert
Mandela's long-time aide, Zelda la Grange, flanked by a bodyguard entered the barricaded area.
Hospital security remained on high alert.
By 22:30, the immediate vicinity of the hospital had grown quiet, including the area around the barricade.
Some journalists sat inside the hospital waiting area, blending with hospital visitors and patients. One journalist carrying a brown paper bag, was seen limping in an attempt to blend in with the ill.
A hospital nurse standing outside the main entrance was overheard saying: "I saw him being flown in (by helicopter) at 14:00."
Frail
Mandela's "routine tests" came a day after Archbishop Desmond Tutu told Sapa that Mandela was "frail".
"I saw him last week," Tutu said in Cape Town on Tuesday.
"He was all right, I mean he's 92, man, you know. And he's frail."
Twitter was abuzz on Wednesday evening with news of Mandela being admitted to hospital.
Tweets
Sandiso Ngubane, @Sandiso_N, tweeted: "My thing is; why would family members from Qunu come to check Madiba out during his "routine check-up"? Sometimes spin is just that... Spin!"
Other tweets speculating about Mandela's health included Siphojanuary who tweeted: " why would the family and high profile people be visiting #Madiba in hospital if he just went for a routine check-up???!"
RanjeniM tweeted "having dinner at Nelson Mandela Square cos only place I can feel close to him now. That statue is somehow comforting #Madiba".
"Hope Mr Nelson Mandela is okay n it really is a routine check up!! I'm really woRried **praying hard**," wrote another twitter user Purplemooky.
Twitter user Norwin tweeted: "#Madiba not in ICU; family and friends seen chatting and laughing. Hospital security stepped up".
"If something happens to Nelson Mandela tonight or in a day or so, do I close shop and let my staff off for the day? 80 employees nationwide?" user WarrenRSmith said.
Report
Earlier this month, a report circulated on the social network that the elder statesman had died.
It was condemned as malicious and insensitive by the African National Congress.
Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport said though the rumours were false, reliable sources had confirmed that Mandela's health had deteriorated.
In mid-January, a Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesman said Mandela was well and on holiday with his wife.
Zuma
President Jacob Zuma does not intend returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos in view of Mandela being admitted to hospital.
"The President is in Davos and will be there until January 28," presidential spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

Twitter gets blocked in Egypt
The US-based microblogging service that allows people to use mobile phones and computers to broadcast short text messages was out of service in Egypt, according to the herdict.org tracking website.
Twitter said in a terse "tweet" that it was blocked in Egypt starting about 1600 GMT and that the interruption had derailed Twitter.com as well as applications linked to the service there.
"We believe that the open exchange of information and views benefits societies and helps governments connect with their people," Twitter representatives said in follow-up message.
Herdict.org, a project of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, said it had received a "handful of reports" from users across different Internet service providers in Egypt saying they had been unable to reach Twitter.
A Herdict.org spokeswoman said that Vodafone Egypt denied that they have blocked Twitter.
"From what we've heard from contacts on the ground, Egyptians are still utilizing the Twitter service via SMS and third-party apps," she said.
Twitter and Facebook were among Internet social networking services reportedly being used by protesters to share information and coordinate activities.
"We're not the experts on how Twitter is being used in highly developing situations 1000s of miles from our comfortable HQ in SF," Twitter said in a message.
"The experts are those using Twitter on the ground and those coordinating with them around the world."
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Egypt, facing down a massive police presence to demand the ouster of Mubarak in protests inspired by Tunisia's popular uprising.
Two protesters died in the port city of Suez in clashes between police and demonstrators and a policeman died from his wounds in Cairo, officials said.
The protests were considered the largest and most significant since riots over bread subsidies shook the Arab world's most populous nation in 1977.
The protest, called by the pro-democracy youth group the April 6 Movement, coincided with a national holiday to mark Police Day.

Flood warning: Pretoria
Tshwane emergency services spokesman Johan Pieterse said while his department was not involved in any rescues and there were no immediate reports of flooding, his department was on high alert on Wednesday.
"With the heavy rains in the city we are expecting problems. People must take the necessary precautions and prepare for lots of rain. I hope they are prepared."
He urged the municipality's residents to stay away from rivers and low-lying areas.
The South African Weather Service earlier on Wednesday issued a warning for possible flash-flooding. The city was forecast to have 10mm of rain on Wednesday, but between 6AM and 9AMm the service reported that 8.8mm had already fallen in Pretoria East.
Rain figures for the rest of the Tshwane metro area were not immediately available.

Toyota: recall nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide
Tokyo - Toyota Motor is to recall nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide including 1.2 million in Japan and 421 000 overseas over a fuel leak risk, the automaker and the Transport Ministry said on Wednesday.
Toyota and the ministry said the recalls include around 245 000 of its luxury Lexus vehicles in the United States and 74 590 Lexus, Crown and other cars in Japan over other leakage fears.
In Japan 19 models produced between 2000 and 2009 will be affected by the recall, the ministry said.
"Slight cracks may appear on the engine fuel pipes. If it continues to be used, the crack may be widened and there may be risks of fuel leakage," the ministry said in a statement.
There have been more than 140 cases reported in Japan, with no accidents, it said.
In 2008 Toyota ended General Motors' 77-year reign as the world's largest automaker but the road has been a bumpy one for the Japanese giant, facing the impact of the economic crisis, recalls and recently a strong yen.
In the past year the automaker has pulled millions of vehicles worldwide over a range of issues following a safety crisis involving brake and accelerator defects that has tarnished its once stellar reputation.
Toyota shares tumbled 1.7% following news of the recall.
On Monday Toyota said its group sales in 2010 rose, enabling the firm to narrowly retain its title as the world's biggest automaker despite the global safety crisis.
Toyota's global sales rose eight percent year-on-year to 8.418 million vehicles last year, narrowly beating the 8.39 million sold by a resurgent General Motors.

iphone 5 launch date
Another hint has surfaced, showing that the iPhone 5 may be launched mid 2011, which should be the first day of Apple' Worldwide Developer Conference.
German website Schimanke points to the fact that the current iPhone 4 Screen from the Apple store shows 7 on the calendar icon (the phone was launched on Monday 7th of June 2010) while the current iOS 4.3 beta one shows the 6th which happens to be a Monday.
It matches our estimated release date (you can see how we worked out the date here) and while the Yerba Buena Centre for Arts is already booked for the 6th of June, the Moscone Conference Centre appears to be free.
There are a number of rumours swirling around what the iPhone 5 will bring, but we reckon the most likely are that it will come with slightly reworked antenna, a new Cortex A5 processor with a new PowerVR-based core, a buttonless design and CDMA/GSM compatibility, as well as a white model being available at launch.

Eat up for your sex life
Coffee and peanuts might seem an unlikely combination, but it's one that could enhance your sexual arousal according to one doctor who has spent a bit of time studying how our eating habits influence our sex lives.
Dr Eric Braverman, author of Younger (Sexier) You, has an interesting theory that focuses on chemicals in your brain and how to balance them to ensure you enjoy a healthy and active sex life. And since we already know that an active sex life helps reduce stress, boost the immune system and improve your mood all round, it's not a bad theory at all.
Regular sex also prevents aging because by ensuring that you keep your "good" hormone production up, thereby slowing down the aging process according to the doctor.
But how on earth does one find the inclination to wear your sexiest pair of undies and get hot and heavy between the sheets three times a week? Low libido stems from an imbalance in brain chemicals and the way to sort that out is diet. The good news is that no matter what age you are, a balanced diet and lifestyle can assist you in raising your libido.
Four essential brain chemicals — dopamine, acetylcholine, GABA and serotonin — play a role in libido and, says Dr Braverman, reduction in desire can be one of the first signs of this chemical imbalance. In fact, loss of libido could point to other larger health problems, while certain kinds of desire loss such as loss of acute sexual sensation, indicates which of these particular chemicals are lacking.
Braverman's book starts with a questionnaire to establish your living habits and diet. And if you thought you'd be reading recommendations of foreign herbs and insane concoctions, rest easy. A cup of coffee and a handful of peanuts can enhance sexual arousal, brown rice can combat sexual indifference and avocado can help enhance the pleasure factor, the Daily Mail reported, referring to the Braverman's book.
He is also specific in his theories around the health benefits of sex. He suggests that orgasms could fight off infection and boost the immune system to ward off colds and flu by boosting T-cell development by 20 percent.
They say that sex boosts happiness and according to Dr Braverman, it also boosts production of our love hormone oxytocin which is believed to influence our ability to bond with others.
Older men are believed to benefit from regular sex which helps in the prevention of prostate cancer and as Dr Braverman pointed out to the Daily Mail, a study conducted by Queen's University in Belfast suggested that having sex more than three times a week could reduce men's chances of heart attack or stroke by half.

Fastest Car in the World 2011
Here you have it ladies and gentleman....the fastest car in 2011.....
1. The SSC Ultimate Aero is an American-built mid-engine supercar by Shelby SuperCars. The higher-performance limited production version, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT produces more emissions-legal horsepower than any other production automobile in the world & previously held the Guinness book of world records record for being the fastest production car. SSC Ultimate Aero: This monster can hit a top speed of 257 mph, and boasts a 0-60 time of just 2.7 secs. It has a twin-turbo V8 Engine and a ridiculous 1183 horse power. Sure, the base price is a mind-numbing $654,400, but there are other (slower) cars on this list for much more. When the Guinness Book of World Records declared the SSC Ultimate Aero the fastest car in the world, car fans were shocked. The old standby Bugatti Veyron has finally been unseated.
2. Bugatti Veyron: The world’s best drivers can reach 253 mph in no time in this vehicle, due to a super low 0-60 time of just 2.5 seconds. This car’s aluminum frame and Narrow Angle W16 Engine clocks in at 1001 horse power. Yes, the base price is an unheard of $1,700,000, but if you really want to turn heads, the Veyron is your chariot.
3. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo: Top speed is 248 mph, and a nothing-to-sneeze-at 0-60 time of 3.2 secs. For being third on this list, the base price of $555,000 seems like a steal.
4. Koenigsegg CCX: Top speed? 245 mph. 0-60 time? 3.2 seconds. Under the hood, the Koenigsegg looks like nothing on the market. A V8 Engine with 806 horsepower sounds weak, but don’t be fooled. The engineers at Koenigsegg are working hard to make this outlandish vehicle the fastest in the world.
5. McLaren F1: It is ridiculous that a car that can hit top speeds of 240 mph (while running from 0-60 in under 3.2 secs) is this far down the list. Made with a BMW S70/2 60 degree V12 Engine (though a measly 627 horse power) the base price is $970,000.
6. Ferrari Enzo: Chances are you’ve never seen this car. With a top speed of 217 mph, and a still stunning but not perfect 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, only 300 of these vehicles were ever produced. Even though you only get 660 horse power, owning one of less than 400 Ferrari models should well be worth the base price of $670,000. Be careful — the price goes up over time, due to the disappearance or breakdown of other models.
7. Jaguar XJ220: It may seem strange to find a Jaguar on this list, but topping out at 217 mph and performing a 0-60 maneuver in less than 4 seconds immediately makes you a contender for world’s fastest car. Featuring a Twin Turbo V6 Engine with 542 hp, the base price was $650,000, but since these cars were only produced for a limited time in 1991, that price is much lower than you’d expect to pay now.
8. Pagani Zonda F: A disappointing entry for Pagani, who at one time were headed for the top of this list. This vehicle only pulls a top speed of 215 mph, though it does have good pickup, moving from 0-60 in 3.5 secs. Why do I say it is an underperformer? Any vehicle with a Mercedes Benz M180 V12 engine (and any vehicle that costs well over $500,000) should perform much better than this. This car is quickly falling off the list.
9. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640: The only Lamborghini on the list boasts a top speed of 211 mph, 0-60 in 3.3 secs. V12 Engine with 640 hp, base price is $430,000. Nice piece of art, the design is very round and smooth.
10. Porsche Carrera GT: Ah, Porsche. The car of doctors and dentists. Though this model only gets up to 205 mph (only!), the 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds is impressive enough to reel in people looking for serious speed. The bare bones model will run you $440,000.
