Safety Tips for Long Distance Driving

In my recent festive holiday trip that took me to South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe I drove at least 2500 km and I have to admit, long distance driving is not easy and as such the primary goal is to arrive safely, time is not an important factor. I have compiled the following tips which i found useful.
- Avoid eating heavy foods while on the road, if possible do not eat heavy foods at all. In my 600 km journey from Swaziland , through South Africa to the Zimbabwean border i did not eat solids at all, only two pints of maheu (African Brewed Drink) and two cans of? Red Bull.
- Constant breaks after every at least two hours. You can drink lots of water and this would in turn force you to take those breaks to loosen and stretch.
- If you feel sleepy STOP and rest at a safe place, if its during the night , at a 24 hour? petrol station. Never pull off on the side of the road, you can be run over by trucks.
- If possible travel with someone who is going to keep you company talking to you, NOT someone who is going to sleep at the front passenger seat.
